Refers to concepts of social integration and the need to build strong social bonds and relationships between people from different backgrounds, often with the aim of addressing social tensions or alleviating inequalities within a single community. Although the term was first used theoretically in the early 20th century, it has become more popular recently, especially within policy discourse, and particularly as it relates to questions of integration, citizenship and belonging, and the governing of citizens within multicultural societies.
