Special Topic: Migration and Emulation

The nestor Praktikertag brings together experts from different communities to learn and discuss new developments and practical approaches to digital preservation.

The main topics of the 2016 event are the long-term archiving strategies of migration and emulation.

A group of experts will present their experiences with migration and emulation procedures. Among these, Peter Pharow (Fraunhofer IDMT) and Stefan Rohde-Enslin (SPK) will present the PREFORMA project.

In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences and to ask questions to the attending experts. In addition to the lecture program, various institutions and companies will showcase their solutions at presentation stands.

The event takes place at the State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) on 14 June 2016.

What

A free, three day symposium focused on Matroska and FFV1 for use in digital audiovisual preservation hosted by Deutsche Kinemathek, Zuse Institute Berlin, and MediaArea.net. The event will feature talks, presentations, and working meetings on Matroska, FFV1, and the software, documentation, and use cases associated with these formats. The event will also present on the current state of the IETF’s CELLAR working group’s progress to develop specifications for Matroska and FFV1 as well as efforts to design and extend software in support of these formats. This event provides an opportunity for format inventors, developers, specification authors, and archivists to collaborate and advance audiovisual preservation formats.

The event is supported by the PREFORMA project.

PERICLES seminar: How can we access digital objects created 20 years ago and 100 years from now?

Music, photographs, videos, scientific data and art are all examples of content which is now stored digitally. How are the institutions that are collecting enormous amounts of digital content – libraries, museums, archives and research institutes – going to make sure that the material is accessible in the future as well? 100 years from now, will we even know what an iPod was? If our grandchildren find a CD, will they be able to listen to the music stored on it? This will be a discussion based on the latest findings on digital preservation from the European scientific project PERICLES and the current experiences of major players in digital preservation.

Open Repositories 2016: Illuminating the World

As previous Open Repositories have demonstrated, the use of digital repositories to manage research, scholarly and cultural information is well established and increasingly mature. Entering our second decade, we have an opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been and, more importantly, where we’re heading. New development continues apace, and we’ve reached the time when many organizations are exploring expansive connections with larger processes both inside and outside traditional boundaries. Open Repositories 2016 will explore how our rich collections and infrastructure are now an inherent part of contemporary scholarship and research and how they have expanded to touch many aspects of our academic and cultural enterprises.

The theme of OR2016 is “Illuminating the World.” OR2016 will provide an opportunity to explore the ways in which repositories and related infrastructure and processes:

bring different disciplines, collections, and people to light;
expose research, scholarship, and collections from developing countries;
increase openness of collections, software, data and workflows;
highlight data patterns and user pathways through collections; and
how we can organize to better support these – and other – infrastructures.

The ICA Congress 2016 will be held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The Congress is a unique opportunity to update your professional knowledge, to compare experiences with colleagues in Korea and other parts of the world, and to meet colleagues and develop new projects. The programme includes more than 200 contributions from well over 300 speakers, many of whom are experts in their chosen fields; some of whom are new professionals building their career and all of whom are passionate about archives.

It features presentations, panels and poster sessions, as well as practical, interactive workshops that “Archives, Harmony and Friendship: ensuring cultural sensitivity, justice and cooperation in a globalised world“.

The Republic of Korea was selected as the host for the ICA Congress 2016 given its world-renowned and long standing archival culture and contributions to digital archives and records management. The ICA Congress 2016 provides a valuable opportunity to share South Korea’s innovative archival culture, and to showcase its diversity, culture and beauty with the world.

PREFORMA @ iPRES 2016 Conference

The Swiss National Library is delighted to announce that the 13th International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES) will take place in Bern from October 3 – 6, 2016.

iPRES is the longest standing digital preservation conference in the world. This important event brings together key theorists, researchers and practitioners to explore the latest trends, innovations, policies and practices in digital preservation.

iPRES 2016 is being structured around two key strands, research and innovative practice, with the aim to promote both the preservation research and the innovative preservation practices that are rooted in the professional digital preservation activities.

The conference features keynotes, conference sessions, panels, workshops, tutorials, poster sessions and a series of social activities. The core conference dates are:

Workshops and tutorials will be held on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.

PREFORMA submitted a workshop proposal “Quality standards for preserving digital cultural heritage” and a paper “Status of CELLAR: Update from an IETF Working Group for Matroska and FFV1“, which have been both accepted.

The workshop will present the results of the project, including demonstration of the conformance checkers developed during the prototyping phase. This will inform a discussion with the digital preservation community – open source community, developers, standardization bodies and memory institutions – about the opportunities offered by PREFORMA and the challenges that are still to be addressed.

The paper describes the IETF CELLAR working group and MediaArea’s efforts with Matroska and FFV1. It will be presented by by Ashley Blewer and Dave Rice.

iPRES2016 will attract participants from leading institutions, projects and initiatives from all around the world.

Athens, 18-19 October 2016

2016 EU Innovation Procurement event

eafip, the European Assistance for Innovation Procurement initiative promoted by the European Commission, is organising a major innovation procurement event, co-hosted by the European Commission and the Greek Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism in Athens, Greece on the 18^th and 19^th October 2016.

The event will include: presentations on the strategic use of innovation procurement by key cities, regions and countries across Europe and beyond; presentations by successful PCP and PPI projects; discussion groups on future funding opportunities moderated by EU officials; as well as presentations about the eafip Toolkit and local assistance (see our website for more information).

PREFORMA has been invited to deliver a presentation at this event in Session 2 at midday (12pm) on 18^th October: Joint Cross-border of procurement. This session will include presentations on joint cross-border Pre- Commercial Procurement (PCP) and Public Procurement of Innovative Solutions (PPI).

The eafip initiative

The eafip initiative focuses on the promotion of the benefits of innovation procurement, providing at the same time training based on a Toolkit that is addressed to policy makers, procurement officers and procurement law firms. Assistance will also be offered to public procurers across the EU with a concrete interest in implementing innovation procurements.

A poster about PREFORMA will be showcased at Cloud Forward 2016 Conference: From Distributed to Complete Computing which will take place in Madrid at the Circulo de Bellas Artes from 18 to 20 October 2016.

About CF2016

The CF2016 Conference brings together experts from industry and academia to present and discuss the future of and beyond Cloud Computing. Based on the HOLA Cloud project and platform – which documents European research, development and innovation in CLOUDs – the conference reviews experiences and discusses future directions to overcome problems and provide new opportunities for the utilisation of leading edge CLOUD Computing by industry and academia and for ICT developers providing innovative solutions.

The conference will provide the scientific community a dedicated setting for presenting and discussing innovative technologies in the area of distributed computing, as well as new technologies beyond CLOUDs, ranging from architectures over methodologies to new applications and services. In Cloud Forward 2016 experts from all over the world will come together to discuss together with the audience the requirements and future goals of cloud related technology development.

Cyprus, 31 October - 5 November 2016

PREFORMA @ EuroMed 2016

Stefan Rohde-Enslin from the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) will present PREFORMA at EuroMed 2016 in Cyprus. The presentation will be part of the panel “Reusing Digital Cultural Heritage: Boosting Education, Audience Engagement, Business Creation” organised by the Europeana Space project on 31 October 2016.

About the panel

Digitisation has been a major objective for most, if not all, cultural content holders in every European country. Museums, Librarie, Galleries, arts organisations and also private archives have completed significant digitisation actions, also with the support of EU financing, so that now the amount of digitised cultural heritage in Europe is really impressive.

Further progressing with digitisation, which should be extended also to minor collections, archives and private citizens, requires us to understand how digital cultural data can be re-used in novel ways, in order to leverage on this wealth of digital resources to improve citizens’ participation, access and enjoyment of cultural heritage and also to unlock the business potential that lies within it.

This panel, organized by the Europeana Space project and involving the most notable EU projects and initiatives dealing with digitised cultural heritage, intends to showcase different approaches, examples and best practice of reuse for digital cultural data, and to assess their impact in terms of enlarging citizen participation, developing advanced tools and resources for educational purposes, and for creating new businesses and job opportunities.

Relevant speakers from the key institutions in Europe, which are involved in the scenario of digital cultural heritage, will illustrate experiences of content reuse that exploit digital technologies to foster societal progress and also economic rewards. The panel is a great occasion for sharing knowledge and networking: cultural managers, ICT experts, researchers, creative industries, service providers and other EU projects are warmly invited to attend.

About the Conference

From the 31st of October until the 5th of November 2016 stakeholders from different backgrounds will have the opportunity to come together, exchange their know-how and experiences in the Cultural Heritage research as well as the current and future worldwide developments in this area.

The 6th EuroMed conference focuses on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research on tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage, the use of cutting edge technologies for the protection, preservation, conservation, massive digitalisation and visualization/presentation of the Cultural Heritage content (archeological sites, artifacts, monuments, libraries, archives, museums, etc). At the same time, the event is intended to cover topics of research ready for exploitation, demonstrating the acceptability of new sustainable approaches and new technologies by the user community, SME’s, owners, managers and conservators of cultural patrimony.
