PREFORMA @ Göteborg Book Fair

PERICLES seminar: How can we access digital objects created 20 years ago and 100 years from now?

Date: 22 September 2016

Time: 12:00- 12:45

Location: Svenska Mässan, Gothenburg, Sweden

Music, photographs, videos, scientific data and art are all examples of content which is now stored digitally. How are the institutions that are collecting enormous amounts of digital content – libraries, museums, archives and research institutes – going to make sure that the material is accessible in the future as well? 100 years from now, will we even know what an iPod was? If our grandchildren find a CD, will they be able to listen to the music stored on it? This will be a discussion based on the latest findings on digital preservation from the European scientific project PERICLES and the current experiences of major players in digital preservation.

With: Efstratios Kontopoulos, PERICLES researcher (CERTH-ITI, Center for Research & Technology Hellas), Christine Sauter, PERICLES Project Manager (King’s College London), Maria Cavallin Aijmer, fil. dr. (Department of History Studies, University of Gothenburg), Sanja Halling (Digisam, Swedish National Archives), Peter Voisey (Findwise), Bengt Neiss (PREFORMA Project and National Library of Sweden), Göran Kristiansson (Swedish National Archives, eARD project manager). Moderator: Nasrine Olson, (The Swedish School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS) at the University of Borås).

Open Repositories 2016: Illuminating the World

OP2016_Solid(1)

As previous Open Repositories have demonstrated, the use of digital repositories to manage research, scholarly and cultural information is well established and increasingly mature. Entering our second decade, we have an opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been and, more importantly, where we’re heading. New development continues apace, and we’ve reached the time when many organizations are exploring expansive connections with larger processes both inside and outside traditional boundaries. Open Repositories 2016 will explore how our rich collections and infrastructure are now an inherent part of contemporary scholarship and research and how they have expanded to touch many aspects of our academic and cultural enterprises.

The theme of OR2016 is “Illuminating the World.” OR2016 will provide an opportunity to explore the ways in which repositories and related infrastructure and processes:

  • bring different disciplines, collections, and people to light;
  • expose research, scholarship, and collections from developing countries;
  • increase openness of collections, software, data and workflows;
  • highlight data patterns and user pathways through collections; and
  • how we can organize to better support these – and other – infrastructures.

About ICA

icaThe International Council on Archives (ICA) is dedicated to the effective management of records and the preservation, care and use of the world’s archival heritage through its representation of records and archive professionals across the globe. Archives are an incredible resource. They are the documentary by-product of human activity and as such are an irreplaceable witness to past events, underpinning democracy, the identity of individuals and communities, and human rights. But they are also fragile and vulnerable. The ICA strives to protect and ensure access to archives through advocacy, setting standards, professional development, and enabling dialogue between archivists, policy makers, creators and users of archives.

The ICA is a neutral, non-governmental organisation, funded by its membership, which operates through the activities of that diverse membership. For over sixty years ICA has united archival institutions and practitioners across the globe to advocate for good archival management and the physical protection of recorded heritage, to produce reputable standards and best practices, and to encourage dialogue, exchange, and transmission of this knowledge and expertise across national borders. With approximately 1600 members in 199 countries and territories the Council’s ethos is to harness the cultural diversity of its membership to deliver effective solutions and a flexible, imaginative profession.

The ICA is a truly international organisation which works with decision-makers at the highest level. As well as working closely with intergovernmental bodies such as UNESCO and the Council of Europe, the ICA has close connections with other non-governmental organisations such as the International Committee of the Blue Shield.
